My 12 year old daughter went into the bishops office for her 12-year-old interview. I joined her. After the friendly and brief interview we asked if she could go ahead and get her temple recommend while we were there. He said yes and proceeded with the questions. When He asked her if she followed the law of chastity she said she wasn’t sure if she even knew what meant. His direct and exact reply was, “ are you having sex with a married man”? My daughter and I both stayed silent and were shocked. So he repeated the same question, “are you having sex with a married man?”
My daughter was scared and confused. I froze up and couldn’t believe he would ask for such a ridiculous question. If she had been with a married man it would have been rape. That was a poor choice to use to describe the law of chastity. I’d like to think he didn’t mean anything bad by it.
He continued the questions and asked her if she owed any money for spousal support. I don’t know why he was asking a 12-year-old adult questions! My daughter left his office crying and begged me to never make her go back. We quit going to church for a while because she was so uncomfortable.
When I later told the bishop about this he denied it. He said that’s not what happened. He tried to switch up the way he described it. But I know that is exactly what he said and I can’t believe he did that. I just wonder how many times a little girl has been in the bishops office and he has said inappropriate things. Why do children need to prove it they are worthy? In gods eyes he loves them all.
My mother was also asked extremely inappropriate questions by her bishop. During her temple recommend interviews he would ask her if she and my father had oral sex. He also asked her what sexual positions they did. He reminded her to be modest. Gross!!
