My stepfather sexually abused my sisters and I when we were younger. I hid the fact, until 5 years later. I wanted to heal from the abuse, and for the first time told my YSA bishop about what happened. He was very supportive and helpful in my recovery.
However, one day my parents and I got in a huge fight. They have horrible communication skills, and decided that we would all go talk to the Bishop together to resolve the fight. This bishop – their family bishop – was good friends with my stepfather. I told him that my stepfather had sexually abused me. My stepfather of course protested and denied it. All that Bishop said was that if it was true I should find a good counselor. He proceeded to allow and support the baptism of my stepfather, even though there was an active court case against him about the sexual abuse.
Now my stepfather has never faced the consequences of abusing three young girls, and has never admitted what happened. He has held callings such as elders quorum president and ward mission leader. I hope that he never gets in a position in charge of the youth.
