I’ve been the therapist for hundreds of people who have expressed feelings of shame, guilt, embarrassment, and self-loathing after having had interviews with their LDS Bishops. And I’ve also been a therapist to a number of bishops.
One of them, in particular, used to describe his problem with a type of voyeurism. He would listen to sexual stories from members of his ward and then go home and write down the stories. As he read the stories, he would fantasize about having sex with that person and masturbate to the memories and fantasies. He would also dress up in women’s lingerie and dresses in private to fulfill his fantasies of being a woman. I only bring this up because it was disturbing to me that so many young people “confessed” to him without knowing that his problems were much darker than theirs.
