When I was 13, my family was not active in the church. Our bishop did, however, reach out to my parents encouraging an interview since I was at a “vulnerable age”. My parents agreed and I soon met with him alone in his office. I did not know this man. He asked me if I was “morally clean”. Alarmed by the question, I pretended not to know what that meant and he proceeded to tell me about masturbation and asked me if I ever masturbated. He asked me if I had ever had sex or “fooled around” with boys. I was completely uncomfortable. This was a stranger. I NEVER wanted to be back in that office. My embarrassment and shame prevented me from telling my parents.
